West Hawaii Today reports on the success of the West Hawaii Teacher Induction & Mentoring Program (WHTIMP), which is part of New Teacher Center’s partnership with the Hawaii Department of Education. With Race to the Top (RTTT) funds and support of the state, WHTIMP has received support from New Teacher Center to strengthen its induction program.  Now in its third year, WHTIMP strives to improve the retention of quality teachers. The high-quality induction program incorporates new state laws and standards, including requirements for every new teacher to participate in the program and to ensure quality and consistent support of teachers.

In the article, administrators and participants called the program a success, because of weekly meetings between mentors and teachers, incorporation of technology, and a final project to chronicle the first year of a new teacher. WHTIMP is hoping to expand the program as they anticipate the number of participants to double. The success of the program is so great, that New Teacher Center has just provided three mentor professional development trainings to broaden the mentor pool for the new teachers that are hired.
