The New Year offers hopeful signs for addressing the needs of new teachers through state policy. In several states, policy leaders and task forces have proposed strengthening induction and mentoring to accelerate the effectiveness of beginning teachers and principals. That’s good news—as there is much work to be done.

I think it is time we talked more about the quality of the support programs being offered to new teachers. I’m concerned that the difference between a low- and high-quality teacher induction program and the respective impact of each may not be fully understood by many school districts. Let me explain.

My NTC colleagues and I are pleased to see so much recent acknowledgement of the importance of supportive conditions to maximize the impact of great teaching. Data from our Teaching and Learning Conditions Initiative demonstrates that educators who report having strong school leadership, sufficient resources and support, and a manageable workload have higher achieving students. Former National Education Association executive director John Wilson understands this, too.
