NewSchools Venture Fund names New Teacher Center Organization of the Year
NewSchools Venture Fund (NSVF) named New Teacher Center Organization of the Year at the NewSchools Summit 2013. This and the rest of the NSVF Portfolio Awards are designed to recognize and celebrate the remarkable achievements of social innovators who are making a difference in the lives of students in underserved communities across the country and changing the national conversation about what’s possible in public education.
A NSVF announcement about the awards states:
New Teacher Center, led by Ellen Moir, has been helping new teachers make their first year a success for themselves and their students since 1998. Since its start, NTC has provided critical induction support to over 85,000 first and second year teachers. The team at NTC knows that providing great induction isn’t enough to support and develop strong novice teachers. This is reflected in the thoughtful innovation that is a hallmark of the organization – an organization truly deserving of organization of the year.
“This award is such an honor, and represents further recognition of the importance of providing intensive support to the growing number of new teachers in the U.S.,” says Ellen Moir, NTC Founder and CEO.
“The nation’s newest educators are too often placed in the toughest classrooms that serve some of the most disadvantaged students – those with the greatest need for a strong teacher,” she explains. “New Teacher Center’s method of identifying and training talented teachers to mentor their newer colleagues addresses this persistent problem in our nation’s education system. We are so grateful to NewSchools Venture Fund for believing in our work and so generously helping us to expand our reach and impact.”
