NTC named a highest rated applicant in 2015 U.S. Department of Education i3 grant competition

$19.9 million i3 Scale-Up grant award would serve nearly 117,000 students in six high-need school districts across the country

SANTA CRUZ, CA (November 13, 2015) – The U.S. Department of Education today announced New Teacher Center (NTC) among the 13 highest-rated Investing in Innovation (i3) applicants for the 2015 grant competition, from a total of over 400 applications. The $19.9 million federal i3 Scale-Up grant, contingent on NTC raising an additional estimated $1 million in matching private funds in the coming month, would allow the organization to expand its successful new teacher effectiveness work in Broward County Public Schools (FL), Denver Public Schools, Fresno Unified School District (CA), New York City Department of Education, Polk County Public Schools (FL) and San Francisco Unified School District.

Over the five-year grant term, this project would serve nearly 117,000 K-12 students and more than 1,800 K-12 teachers, with a primary focus on new teachers supporting students in high-need schools. The U.S. Department of Education awards i3 Scale-Up grants to organizations that have demonstrated their effectiveness through past i3 projects, in an effort to help them significantly expand their reach. NTC received its first i3 grant, totaling $14.68 million, in December 2012.

“New Teacher Center’s method of preparing talented, experienced teachers to mentor their newer colleagues – helping them become more effective, faster – addresses a persistent problem in our nation’s education system,” says Ellen Moir, NTC founder and CEO. “More than 300,000 beginning teachers are hired each year, often receiving the toughest teaching assignments. This will give us a chance to get more of those new teachers on the path to excellence early.”

NTC has been the premier provider of high-quality teacher mentoring and induction across the nation for over 20 years. The organization’s comprehensive approach to teacher induction is a departure from “buddy” mentoring programs, where the focus can be limited to emotional support and showing a new teacher school facilities rather than on improving instruction. In contrast, in NTC’s model, mentors are carefully selected from the best teachers in each district, rigorously prepared using NTC’s research-based curriculum and methodology, and deployed in a district to bolster new teachers’ skills and abilities, those known to have greatest impact on student learning. NTC’s model is designed to be sustainable over the long term, when grant funding ends, by building the capacity of district partners and transferring knowledge and skills.

The U.S. Department of Education will announce final 2015 i3 grant award recipients by December 31, 2015.
