New Teacher Center Statement on Betsy DeVos Hearing

Today, New Teacher Center released a statement following the nomination hearing of Betsy DeVos, President Trump’s nominee for education secretary, before the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions.

Given the critical importance of teachers and principals in helping all students to become college and career ready, New Teacher Center is disappointed that little time was spent during the confirmation hearing for Betsy DeVos on Tuesday evening discussing how she as Education Secretary would support their work.

As a result, we sadly don’t know any more about the nominee’s views about the core function of schools – teaching and learning – than we did before yesterday’s hearing. Such uncertainty is particularly unhelpful for those dedicated educators doing the work of teaching America’s children.

Over the next four years, it is our hope that federal education funding will not be cut and that policy changes will not detract from a focus on strengthening effective teaching in American schools. We will communicate our concerns about any proposals that do not further the provision of an effective teacher and a quality school for every child in America.
